A 15 day overland journey that introduces you to the magnificent coastal regions of India. India has so many faces and in this tour you will be introduced to cities, beaches, rivers and the Western Ghats. All living in harmony in one country.
After arriving at the airport take a taxi to the hotel. The itinerary will starts from tomorrow. We believe having a moment to relax after a flight is important to start fresh the next day. Later in that evening we will meet up at the hotel lobby for a quick introduction and will head off to have our first meal together.
Day 2 -3
Today we start off with a kick, we will be heading towards Asia’s biggest Slum – Dharavi, (it was one of the biggest highlights on the last tour) You will be introduced to our local guide Felix who will then take us on our journey. Today will be full-on as we will be out all morning using local transport to move around. The following day we will meander around south Mumbai when Felix will take us on a walk past the heritage building of the British Raj, marine drive, Local treats at Chowpatty Beach in Girgaon and a visit to the Gandhi museum.
Dharavi Slum tour, Gandhi museum, Marine drive and Heritage walk
An early morning wake-up call to reach us in time for our only train journey in this tour. We will have a lunch pack prepared for you as the journey will take up most of our day. There is plenty of time for you to walk around the train and get a feeling of the different classes and we could even play a game of cards and gaze out the window to the country side passing by.
Indian train experience
Day 5 -6
After arrival at the station we will be greeted by our driver and taken to our hotel at the shore. North Goa is packed with loads of activities and sights. One of the activities is the Wednesday flea market, where you can discover the many designers that sell handmade clothing and jewellery. Luckily the market is right on the beach so having a drink and a swim could be an option for some as well. On day 6 you have a free day to do whatever you like, a day to relax or plan an activity of your own.
Wednesday Flea Market, day off
We leave the shores behind and head for the capital city of Goa – Panjim. Panjim has loads to offer and is worth staying here for a night as the Portuguese influences are a pleasant vibe to experience; colourful houses, blue painted tiles with big shady trees. A visit to Old Goa’s Se Cathedral and Bob Jesus (UNESCO world Heritage site) are on the list as well.
Panjim, Old Goa churches, city walk
Goa is the smallest state of India but has many different aspects. The North is more up-beat and the South more relaxed, so here in Palolem we stay for just one night at comfortable but simple beach huts. Later we will meet up with chef Rahul to enjoy a hands-on cooking class. There is also the opportunity to go kayaking.
Hands-on Cooking class
We cross the border with Karnataka and leave Goa behind. We stop at Murudeshwar to visit a Hindu Shiva statue, a modern temple where many Hindu devotees come and worship and a nice introduction towards modern Hindu religion. You could pop in and have some lunch at a local spot. After the stop we continue driving to Kundapur.
Murudeshwar temple visit
Day 10 – 11
Driving past coffee, pepper and rubber plantation and rolling hills of the Coorg plateau is a sight on its own already and we top it off staying two nights at a home stay. Last year’s guests suggested to stay here 2 nights as 1 night was clearly not enough to enjoy the wonderful home stay that is surrounded by coffee plants. We suggest going for a long walk witnessing the lovely views and misty hills whilst soaking up the village life.
Coffee plantation intro and village walk
Day 12 – 13
Just across the border with Karnataka we travel further south into Wayanad a Northern district in Kerala. We need to drive through Tholpetty National Park and we may come across elephants as we did on our last tour. Once arrived at our hotel we will be greeted with chai and lemon water. The staff are so friendly and they will prepare a BBQ for us and take us trekking in a nearby village. The views from the retreat are unique as many animals visit the watering hole throughout the day. You may see: Sambar, Peacocks, wild dogs and elephants from the retreats viewing point.
Wildlife watching, Jeep safari, BBQ
Our last stop in Kozhikode will be a typical coastal city in North Kerala. It is here where we will visit a Kalari school for ancient martial arts and taste delicious Malabar cuisine. Kozhikode was and still is a major centre point for spice trading.
